The Why:
pounds, stones, grams, kilograms, tonnes, metric tonnes, stones ... so much for standardisation ...
With all these different units to measure weight (or better mass) it's easy to get lost and confuse everything.
Sure there are a lot of online conversion utilites but what the heck... it's called competition :)

For such a trivial application, it's way too easy to embed JavaScript in a webpage to use anything other.
The When:
Well, it's started ...
